OSCAR CLAUDE MONET was born on November 14th 1840, in Paris France. His work gave a name to the art movement Impressionism, which was concerned with capturing light and natural forms.
He would paint the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. In May 1883, Monet and his family rented a house and two acres of land in Giverny, France. There was a barn that doubled as a painting studio, orchards and a small garden. The surrounding landscape offered an endless array of suitable subjects for Monet’s work. By 1899 Monet had built magnificent gardens at Giverny. He worked on
“series” paintings, in which a subject was depicted in varying light and weather conditions.
His first series exhibited was “Haystacks”, painted from different points of view and at different times of the day. Other series of paintings include Rouen Cathedral, Poplars, the Houses of Parliament, Mornings on the Seine, and the Water Lilies.

Monet began painting “Water Lilies” in 1899, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next twenty years of his life.

Monet died on December 5th 1926 at his home in Giverny, France.
