For best results & safe usage of your Tipperary Candle, please refer to our safety guidelines and candle care instructions below;
Important Candle Safety
- Never leave a burning candle unattended, and make sure to extinguish the flame before leaving a room or going to sleep.
- Keep candles away from children and pets to ensure their safety.
- Burn only on a stable, heat-resistant surface (use a heatproof coaster to safeguard furniture).
- Candles should be burned away from other sources of heat, such as tv sets and direct sunlight. Ensure candles are placed at least 4” (10cm) apart.
- Do not burn candles near any flammable materials such as curtains, bedding or books.
- Keep the candle free of matches and other flammable materials.
- Do not touch or move candle while burning, or if wax is hot.
- Do not allow candles to burn to completion. Please ensure to extinguish the candle on the last burn when there is at least 1cm of wax remaining in the base of the glass container.
- Certain candle fragrances may trigger allergic reactions, so please check the CLP warning on the label for any precautions.
Wick & Candle Care Guidelines
- Trim wick to ¼” (5mm) prior to lighting your candle. If the candle/ wick smokes when lit, extinguish the flame, allow the candle to cool, and trim wick before re-lighting.
- Long (untrimmed) wicks can lead to high flames; which can damage the glass container, cause uneven burning and soot build-up (black residue on the glass container and/ or wax).
- Wicks can be trimmed using designated wick trimmers or a pair of scissors or nail clippers.
- For the first burn, allow the wax to melt to the edge of the glass container for an even burn throughout, and to avoid tunnelling.
- For best results, burn candles for 3-4 hours at one time. Do not allow the candle to burn for longer than 4.5 hours.
- If the wick comes too close to the container wall, extinguish the flame, allow the candle to cool, and then carefully re-centre and trim the wick to avoid cracking the glass container.
- To ensure a clean burn, inspect the wax pool and remove any debris as this can act as a secondary wick, causing the candle to burn unevenly.
How to stop your candle from burning unevenly
- The first burn of a candle is the most important. If a candle is not burned long enough to allow the wax to liquefy to the edge of the glass container on the first burn, the wax will create a “memory ring” once it has cooled.
- Once this memory ring has been formed, it will cause a tunnelling affect with every subsequent lighting of the candle. The candle will continue to burn following the pattern of the first memory ring (leaving a ring of unused wax remaining along the walls of the candle container). This can shorten the lifespan of the candle, and eventually cause the wick to burn out.
- To prevent tunnelling, and to ensure an even burn, allow the wax to fully melt to the container's edge during the initial burn. As a guideline, candles should burn one hour for every 1-inch diameter of the candle size. For example, a candle that is 3 inches across should burn for 3 hours.
- If the candle is stored in a cold room, the temperature of the wax will affect the burn time. For best results, light the candle when the wax is at optimal room temperature (20 degrees centigrade).
Best Practices for Candle Storage
- For long-term storage, cover candles to protect the wax from dust and debris, which can create safety hazards. The Glass Cloche from Tipperary Crystal is perfect for this, preserving both the wax and fragrance while adding an elegant touch.
- Store candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, discoloration, and cracking from extreme cold.
- Always follow the safety instructions on the candle’s label.
